They say a man buys something for two reasons: a good reason and the real reason. And I have always thought that with Tapbots their apps cater to that. There is a good reason to buy an app from Tapbots, but there is also another (and perhaps, more real) reason. And the real reason is that you want to play with the app. Because, like I said, to use it feels like a privilege.
This is the same function/form (or form/function) debate designers have had for years. The truth is, they are both critical.
The internet is a huge place with thousands of apps available. Your product has to be both functional and enjoyable to get any massive market share.
Update: To prove the power of this… TapBots overtook Camera+ in the AppStore rankings in it’s first 24 hours.
